POK CHONG BOON
Andrew Pok Chong Boon is a contemporary artist, freelance art writer, curator and educator based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Being mindful to the everyday, his art practice ranges from sculpture, installation, photography and interactive performance. His recent artworks were featured in ‘The ASEAN + Contemporary Art KKU 2022’ (Khon Kaen University, Thailand), ‘What you are the World is’ (The Godown KL, 2021), ‘Edge of the Wonderland’, Thailand Biennale (Krabi, 2018–19), ‘Senses’ in Arts for the Neighbourhood (Tampines, Singapore, 2019), and the Ulsan International Woodcut Print Art Festival 2020 & 2021 (Ulsan, South Korea). His PhD thesis “The Mind of the Everyday in Contemporary Fine Art and Zen Buddhist Practice” explores the relationship between the everyday in art and Zen Buddhism practice.
Pok currently works as a supervisor for the PhD students from a local university. Apart from his teaching and artistic practice, Pok also contributed his writings to several publications including ‘Huang Yao: the Remarkable Guest of Malaya’ (National Art Gallery, 2014), ‘Choong Kam Kow: Cross Culture/Trans Era’ (National Art Gallery, 2015), and ‘A Survey on Malaysian’s Printmaking Art: Pre-independence Era to Now’ (UIWPAF, South Korea).
Pok has been actively involving in the Kuala Lumpur art scene since 2012. He is the co-founder of Studios Samasama (2017), SERFEST: Seni Rampai Festival, Kuala Lumpur (2018), and the former art collectives Artsemble (2015) and Yida (2020). He has also curated several exhibitions including ‘When We Meet Again’ (2018), ‘Tapi Project: Shine the Light with 3,000’ (2016) and ‘Catalysis’ (2015).
